Port Blair Andaman

Andaman brings to mind the Cellularjail in PortBlair - its imposing structure which screams of the sufferings of the so called ' criminals' who took part in our National Movement. They were transported there with the intention of keeping each of them in isolation and exclusion.nnIt is recorded that the Cellular jail was specially constructed with 693 cells, from 1896-1906, with the sole aim of keeping each prisoner in solitary confinement. The prisoners kept in solitary confinement could neither see each other nor communicate in any manner possible.nOriginally, 7 wings each with 3 floors were built & each wing connected to a Centre Tower which acted as a watch tower with an alarm bell. A model of this is kept in the Museum.nAt present only 3 wings & centre Tower stand a testimony to the torture and punishment the inmates were subjected to. It is the National Monument now with a Museum. Sound & Light show is arranged ( not on all days) . A must watch Show which re-creates the ordeals & anguish the inmates experienced here in the past. The inhuman treatments meted out to them makes our heart heavy & tears roll down spontaneously. Women prisoners were confined in another location where we reached by boat. They too were tortured and not spared from death sentence.nIt is said , in 1942 the Japanese occupied Andaman & the Britishers became the inmates of the cell for a short time. After WW-II, in 1945, the Britishers took over the control again.nnOur mood was lightened greatly by the colour of the sea, the sky and lush green trees. We visited other places of interest like the temple, Lime stone caves, Museum, Mud Volcano & the Mangroves . The boat ride to view coral, sea anemone etc. from glass bottomed boat was a rewarding experience. Another exciting activity was snorkelling! My first ever experience to go under water and see the sea creatures at such close quarters in natural setting! The climate being warm & sunny, managed to go two times. The weather suited me perfectly & I felt healthy throughout my stay there.nWonderful trip! Very impressive. Wish to experience again.

Pollution free place.

There is no activity left after you are don going to the beaches. Government has not done anything at all to make it a tourist friendly place. The place dead on sundays and you wont find any shop any tourist related activities and hardly any transportation. How will the island get tourists if this how the island is not a tourist friendly place. I'll always recommended goa over Andaman. Goa is anytime 1000times more happening and tourist friendly. Port Blair is the capital of Andaman & Nicobar.Veer Savarkar International Airport is the name of Port Blair Airport named after Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.Well maintained city.Weather is very good.As Port Blair is mainly tourist oriented place ,so everything is bit costly.

Port blair is the Main city of Andaman and Nicobar islands. Small but has its own culture and tradition. Cellular jail is one of the Main attraction here. Clean city. Food is bit costly but all types of food available.
