Locally known as Baba Khamba, Heliodorus pillar was erected by a Greek ambassador, Heliodorus. Bidisha was the capital of the Shungas and Heliodorus came to the court of a Shunga ruler called Bhagbhadra. He was a devotee of lord Vishnu and dedicated the pillar to him. There is an inscription, known as Besnagar pillar inscription, at the base of the pillar.nnBaba Khamba alias Heliodorus pillar is 15/20 min drive from Bidisha Railway station.

The pillar is historically very important. Its good to visit it if you are visiting Sanchi or Udayagiri. There is no entry ticket nor any charges for parking or photography. Its just the one pillar.

Do spare 15-20 minutes for this monument, if you visit the Udaigiri Caves. The pillar, erected in front of a temple by Heliodorus, bears Greek style. Many persons still worship it.
