According to Hindu mythology the festival celebrates and commemorates the victory of Goddess Chamundeshwari after slaying the demon Mahishasura and the triumph of good over evil. The Dasara festivities have become an integral part of the culture and life in Mysore. Best time to visit Mysore is during the Dussehra which culminates with the procession on the last day of the Dussehra. During these 9 days (which is the Hindu festival of Navratri which falls during Sep/Oct ) the Palace and the streets are decorated and illuminated with lights.
