District & Sessions Judge Court, Karimganj

The Karimganj District is situated in the southernmost part of the state of Assam in Northeast India. The three neighboring districts, namely Karimganj, Cachar, and Hailakandi constitute Barak valley named after the river Barak. Karimganj town, the headquarter of the Karimganj District is the second largest town in the Barak Valley. River Kushiara bifurcates from the river Barak and flows out of Karimganj. This river is an international border separating Assam and Bangladesh. The total area of the District is 1809 sq. km.nAt present, there are 11 (eleven) Courts in the Karimganj District having a population of 10,07,976 and a literacy rate of 67.21% as per the 2001 census, under the judgeship of the District & Sessions Judge, Karimganj. All the Civil Courts including the Court of Addl. District & Sessions Judge (F.T.C.) are housed in the court complex of the District & Sessions Judge.nnThe existing courts within the said complex are:-nnThe Court of the District & Sessions Judge,nThe Court of Addl. District & Sessions Judge(F.T.C.),nThe Court of Civil Judge and Asstt. Sessions Judge,nThe Court of Munsiff No. 1nThe Court of Munsiff No. 2nThe Court of Munsiff No. 3nAll the Criminal Courts in the Karimganj District are under the establishment of the Chief Judicial Magistrate are housed in the building of the Deputy Commissioner office, Karimganj.nnThe existing courts within the said complex are:-nnThe Court of Chief Judicial MagistratenThe Court of Addl. Chief Judicial MagistratenThe Court of Sub-Divisional Judicial MagistratenThe Court of Judicial Magistrate First class No. 1nThe Court of Judicial Magistrate First class No. 2nThe District has 2(two) Foreigners’ Tribunals that are presently functioning.nnThe District Legal Service Authority (D.L.S.A.) chaired by District & Sessions Judge is implementing various schemes adopted by NALSA (National Legal Service Authority) and ASLSA(Assam State Legal Service Authority). The Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum is functioning on a part-time basis, the District & Sessions Judge is ex-officio president of the Forum.nnPresently the staff strength of the establishments of District & Sessions Judge and Chief Judicial Magistrate is 49 Nos. and 48 Nos. respectively. The District area is divided among 7(Seven) police stations, namely Karimganj, Badarpur, Patherkandi, Ramakrishna Nagar, Ratabari, Nilambazer, and Bazericheera.
