Johnstone Higher Secondary School, one of the oldest school in Manipur was founded in 1885 by Sir James Johnstone, the political agent of Manipur from 1877-1886 (during the British colonial rule in India). Established in 1921, the school is now a Higher Secondary School under the Government of Manipur for boys only, affiliated to The Council of Higher Secondary Education, Manipur. The school is located at the heart of Imphal city, in close proximity to the Western gate of Kangla. The Ima Keithel is also situated less than a kilometre from the school. The school is one of the first Government school to have Audio-visual Smart Classes when installation of equipment begin during the year 2013.
