Sri Bhimeswara Swamy Temple is situated at 16˚ 11’ 41.25” North Latitude and 80˚ 31’ 38.04” East Longitude. Chebrolu is a mandal head quarters located at a distance of 14 kms on Guntur – Ponnur road in Guntur District. Chebrolu is mentioned as Tamrapa, Tamrapuri and Chembolu in the inscriptions.nThe Bhimeswara temple is a class by itself in design. The temple is rectangular on plan. The garbhalaya is situated on the first floor of the two storied temple. It has doorways on all the four sides, corresponding to the opening in the outer walls are beautifully carved. The garbhagriha is surrounded by a pradakshina patha. Towards the east of the Garbhalaya is the mahamandapa supported by two rows of pillars. Towards the north-east corner is a shrine for Devi, who was added in a later phase. There are stair ways leading to the ground floor of the temple on either side from the floor level of the first floor. There is a staircase on the from side upto the Dhwaja sthambha. A Nandi is installed on a pedestal.nOn vertical axis, the temple consists of an ornate adhisthana all-round with provision of doorways on either side. The walls are decorated with pilasters and Kosthas surmounted by makara toranas. There are two doorways in the salakosthas on North and Southern sides used as entry and exist of the temple. The door ways lead into small compartments which contain flight of steps leading to the garbhalaya.nRaja Venkatadri Naidu, the Zamindar of Amaravati provided the present entrance on the east side in early 19th century as it was difficult to use the narrow doorway on the sides, the Raja closed them and built the present steps.nThis there storied temple was built by Chalukya Bhima- I who ruled Vengi between 892-925 A.D., who lent his own name to the presiding deity i.e., Bhimeswara Swamy. It is similar in architecture to those the pancharama temples.nRecent scientific clearance activity taken up by the department exposed the once buried Adhisthana of the temple and a good number of pillars and Buddhist sculptural panels of a stupa datable to the satavahana – Ikshvaku times (2nd – 3rd centuries A.D.).
