Although only two galleries of that splendid cloister survived, they provide grate notion about that monument of Norman culture. A lot of curved capitals survived too. You are required to by a ticket to Cathedral Museum to get in the cloister. Visitors are allowed to take non commercial photo.
Wonderful.
The cloister from the Norman period is an artistic jewel, of the type with a double capital on double columns. Only two wings remain, the other two wings have been rebuilt with simple modern style iron structures.
The capitals are decorated with animal figures, and in some with biblical stories. In one corner there was a fountain, as in the cloister of Monreale, which must be restored and repositioned in its place.
The cloister was restored in 2003,
Unfortunately only 2 sides of this cloister remain. The fountain and the other 2 sides have been lost. The cost of entry is definitely excessive for a simple tourist.
The cathedral, whose construction was initiated in 1140 by Roger II, also included a cloister with a cloister. The capitals are not nearly as impressive as in Monreale, but the stone carvings are so interesting that you should take some time to look at them.
A posse for today, but at that time a sign of the bishop's power: around 1600 the cloister was dismantled, then a 5m deep trench was excavated and repositioned. This more than necessary renovation work gave the bishop the opportunity to reach the cloister directly from his house. Practical, complex, wasteful ...
