DESCRIPTION
AT YOUR PLACE
Built in 1546.
Founded in the XVI century.
Partially destroyed in 1945.
HISTORY
The town of Traghetto is mentioned in the Ferrara Statutes of 1287 and the origin of the toponym may derive from the Latin "trasectum", the place where the river passes. The parish church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, in 1574 had a baptismal font and was granted in patronage to the fathers of families of the town. This privilege remained until a few decades ago. In 1767 the Reno river was lifted into the Po di Primaro and after a short time a disastrous route caused the flooding of the Ferry and the surrounding countryside. The banks were raised but other floods occurred in 1824, in 1896 and in 1948. The town and the church were largely destroyed following the war events of 1945 and after the war they were rebuilt from the foundations.
