The origin of the Abbey dates back to the 6th-7th centuries, when a Benedictine settlement was built on what was the Insula Pomposia, a wooded island surrounded by two branches of the river and protected by the sea. After the year 1000 the season of greatest splendor began and it became a thriving monastic center devoted to a life of prayer and work, whose fortune was linked to the figure of the abbot San Guido. The Pomposian monastery welcomed illustrious personalities of the time, including Guido d'Arezzo, the monk inventor of musical writing based on the seven note system. The decline began in the fourteenth century due to the spread of malaria. Since 1986 the title of abbot of Pomposa belongs jointly to the archbishop of Ferrara.
