The origin of the Abbey dates back to the 6th-7th centuries, when a Benedictine settlement was built on what was the Insula Pomposia, a wooded island surrounded by two branches of the river and protected by the sea. After the year 1000 the season of greatest splendor began and it became a thriving monastic center devoted to a life of prayer and work, whose fortune was linked to the figure of the abbot San Guido. The Pomposian monastery welcomed illustrious personalities of the time, including Guido d'Arezzo, the monk inventor of musical writing based on the seven note system. Those who love ancient art should not miss the opportunity to admire in the Basilica of Santa Maria one of the most precious fresco cycles in the whole province of Giotto inspiration and the beautiful mosaic floor with inlays of precious marbles placed between the VI and XII

A monastic community is attested since the sixth century. It was founded by Irish monks following S. Colombano. In the ninth century. if they have documentary confirmations. The current abbey church was consecrated in 1026 under the direction of the abbot S. Guido, whose life is narrated in precious frescoes. The decline began in the fourteenth century due to the spread of malaria. Since 1986 the title of abbot of Pomposa belongs jointly to the archbishop of Ferrara. The building is known for its plant, with its paleo-Christian flavor, for the almost intact frescoes and for the large bell tower.
