Alfio La Ferla (06/14/2017)
The Church of S. Agata was built around the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 18th century. It was originally named after San Pietro. Girolamo Di Marzio Ferro states that "... the origin is obscure - it is certain that in 1537 it was governed by its parish priest Nicolao Lancerotto and in 1558 by Antonio Lentini. The nearby church of San Pietro was added to this church in 1695 by an act of the notary Alfio Ingo ”. Before the earthquake of 1693, the church had a high bell tower with a square shape, with a snail-shaped interior, all carved, built by the French in the time of Charles of Anjou, before the Sicilian Vespro. After the earthquake it was rebuilt and merged with the nearby church of S. Pietro, built in 1390 and also destroyed. The church, with three naves, is decorated with stuccos and has an elegant carved stone facade decorated with pilasters with capitals. The portal, with a tympanum surmounted by a large window, is crowned by a terminal pediment with a stone cross and flanked by two towers, two orders, with eighteenth-century bells. Inside the apse, which preserves the ancient wooden high altar, with the canvas depicting the martyrdom of S. Agata by Bonino Pingebat from 1614, has a baptistery with a carved stone baptismal font and a wrought iron fence. We can also admire the Baroque chapel dedicated to the SS. Sacramento of 1600, restored in 1884 with the baroque altar of carved and gilded wood, and the choir with the 18th century pipe organ, covered with carved and gilded wood.
