The monastic complex with the adjoining Ospedale dei Pellegrini, located close to the old city walls, was built around 1340 by the Angevin princess Agnese di Durazzo, Pro salute animae of the bridegroom Giovanni Fratello of King Robert of Anjou, and the the church dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, as shown by the Swiss Post inscription on the portal's architrave. The ecclesial building and the adjoining convent, the latter today used as a City Palace, were first entrusted to the Celestine Fathers (it was one of the first Apulian headquarters of the Congregation founded in 1264 come from the Benedictine lineage) and later to the Fathers Lazzari. Between the end of 1400 and the beginning of 1500 the Church was dedicated to San Benedetto. The facade dates back to the mid-1300s

Made beautiful 1340 by Princess Agnese di Durazzo was initially dedicated to St. John the Evangelist. Between the end of the 400 and the beginning of the 500 it was named after San Benedetto. Restored in 1700 it has unfortunately lost its original appearance with the addition of baroque elements. Opposite a Norman watchtower was incorporated into the bell tower. In front of the old city walls there was one of the oldest public hospitals, the hospital of pilgrims always wanted by Agnese di Durazzo, wife of Giovanni D'Angiò. Of this hospital (completely destroyed) remains only a two-light window incorporated in a modern building. Unfortunately the church is almost always closed, but I advise you to go there only to see it from outside, between church, bell tower and the view that you will see are sure that you will not be disappointed!
