The church of San Francesco can be traced back to the years between 1343 and 1352. The construction of the building was ordered by Joanna I of Anjou, sovereign of the Kingdom of Naples, at the request of the Archbishop of Siponto-Gargano ' Peter. Sadly, the church today is neoclassical because of the many changes that took place over the centuries. In the last 20 years it has thankfully been brought to light something of the fourteenth century church. Legend (and various studies on existing documents) has it that Queen Joanna is buried here and not in Naples, in fact, to the right as you notice a sarcophagus that was moved during the restoration in 1676 from its original location in the central area of choir. Coming in Monte S. Angelo can not miss a visit to the church of San Francesco, with the adjoining ethnographic museum G. Tancredi.
