Monumental Church of San Lorenzo in Vineis. San Lorenzo in Vineis or delle Signore is a church and monastery of San Pietro in Vetere. From the beginning of the thirties of the 12th century a convent of Poor Clares was built around this structure. Built near the bridge of the Madonna del Sole, along the busy road that connects Bolsena and the heights of Alfina to Porta Maggiore, the Church of San Lorenzo already exists in 1140, the date mentioned in a donation from the bishop. In 1225 Cardinal Ugolino de 'Conti, the future Gregory IX, bought the land adjacent to the Church of San Lorenzo where he built a monastery in 1227. Elected in 1228, Ranerio (bishop of Orvieto) had the first years of his episcopate San Lorenzo in vineis in the list of churches dependent on the bishopric and the Poor Ladies were installed there at the latest in 1232, when they bought the building from the bishop. On this date the monastery, the cloister, the gardens and the dependent land are surrounded by walls and house forty nuns. In 1233 Gregory IX came to visit the monastery. The church is now located in the heart of the municipal cemetery.
