Church of San Giovanni Evangelista. The church of San Giovanni Evangelista is one of the oldest in Orvieto and, like many churches on the cliff, it would have been built on several pre-existing levels, each of which belonged to different eras. Therefore the church is believed to be founded on the remains of a Roman theater which was built on the previous remains of an ancient Etruscan temple. Next to the church is the ancient convent with a large and airy cloister characterized by an elegant colonnade, the cloister was built at the behest of Monsignor Alberi in the early sixteenth century. The whole structure is connected to what is now the former convent of the church and has become the Palazzo del Gusto, a building that houses spaces dedicated to conventions and institutional and provincial headquarters in which the Enoteca is located on the suggestive underground floors.
