In the church there is the great Crucifix, an authentic masterpiece of seventeenth-century wooden sculpture, the work of Frate Umile da Petralia, a pious religious from Sicily, it is the strongest attraction for the citizens of Cutro.
Place of worship of the Friars Minor of Calabria
Cutro crucifix 1
This beautiful Crucifix was carved in the seventeenth century by friar Umile Pintorno from Petralia. It is said that Friar Umile, after sketching the statue, began to model it in the artistic visipne he had proposed with intensity. He contemplated his work and prayed for the pains of Jesus during his crucifixion. Legend (I firmly believe) tells Friar Humble, failing to realize the head on the evening of Good Friday began to invoke the Lord's help. Then tired he fell asleep. When he awoke he looked and, shouting at the miracle, saw his head already carved and placed on the body of Christ. The sculpture was declared a "national monument" in 1940 and was restored in 1999. The popular tradition has it that in 1861 there was a severe drought, which severely hit cereal crops. The peasants turned to the friars of the sanctuary so that, thanks to their prayers, the Holy Crucifix sent the much desired rain. Monsignor Antonio Piterà, primicerio of the collegiate decided to carry the statue in procession through the streets of the town, as a sign of penitence, and at the end of the procession, finally the rain ended the drought, saving the harvest. Later, the Feast of the Holy Crucifix became the patronal feast of the town, celebrated every year on May 3rd.
Furthermore, in gratitude for the grace received, it was decided to celebrate a special festival that lasts from April 30th to May 3rd, with two processions: the first of penitence, accompanied by the sound of funeral marches, and the second, instead, characterized by signs of jubilation for the divine gift.
To recap: The "big" party is every seven years because on this occasion the Crucifix comes out through the streets of the town, after which it remains and remains for 7 years locked up in the niche of the Church of the Reformation of the Friars Minor.
Managed by Franciscan monks in the adjoining convent, the parish and the church revolve around the miraculous figure of the Saint. Crucifix, seventeenth-century wooden work, made by Frate Umile from Petralia Soprana.
The wooden crucifix inside the church has an extremely expressive, touching, one of the most evocative faces I have ever seen
