It was built in the 50s-60s of the last century, on a project by the architect Giuseppe Vaccaro (1896-1970) one of the greatest Italian architects of the twentieth century. The new Church, although like the previous one is dedicated to S. Maria Assunta, stands in a different place from the one where the ancient Cathedral was erected for centuries and was destroyed by the bombings of April 13, 1945.
