Giuseppe Celsi (10/21/2019)
Ruins of a Church from the 10th century d.C., also called "Armenian Church" for the particular free cross plan, typical of Armenia. Built by Eastern monks, it was the center of the community of nearby hermitic caves. It is the largest of all the churches of the Byzantine era in Amendolara (22 meters X 22 meters) and is one of the few examples in Italy of a church in the form of a "free cross" or "four-leaf clover" (see the photo of the reconstructed plant ). The ruins consist of an apse and two walls with splayed windows. " On the presence of the Armenians in Calabria - with reference to the time of the construction of the church - it is traced to the military operations of Niceforo Foca the old (830-896 AD) which led to the so-called Byzantine reconquest of Calabria (885-886), when contingents military made up of Armenians settled in Calabria as layers.
