Initially the basilica was named after the 12 apostles and only from the 6th century - at San Siro (one of the first bishops of Genoa). Subsequently the church was entrusted to the Benedictines and again to the order of the Teatini who engaged in a total renovation of the building. In the 16th century, after the plague, the church had to undergo an inevitable reconstruction following a fire. It is not known with certainty who designed the church: they hypothesize it may have been Andrea Ceresola, known as Vannone. On the walls of the church the pictorial decoration by the most important Genoese artists and painters tells the stories of San Siro and San Pietro to affirm the primacy of the church of Rome and Genoa.
