Chiesa di San Basilide

From the earliest quotations, there appears to exist in Piolo a fortress located in the place where the Church was destroyed, destroyed by the earthquake of 1920 at the western end of the village. In 1145 the castle appears to be the property of the Dalli and the Vallisneri. In 1245 the Emperor Federico II injected Piolo to Giacomo Salinguerra. From this period it belonged only to two branches of the Dalli family until 1383 when it passed by testament to the Vallisneri family. Of the church of San Basilide, although it is logical to suppose its existence since the creation of the fortress, we have the first news in 1378. It was dependent on the Pieve di Minozzo. The Vallisneri lost the fief in 1431, when the inhabitants gave themselves to the Estensi di Nicolò III. Piolo was connected to the Podesteria of Minozzo and obtained privileges in 1454 due to its position on the border with Tuscany. It was therefore a fief of the Brusati and the counts Tassoni, who took over the Marches Bernardi in 1660, who remained there until the abolition of the feuds. In 1788 the municipality of Piolo had 354 inhabitants and the marquis 773. After the Restoration Piolo became part of the Commune of Minozzo and from 1860 to that of Ligonchio. Seismic events have almost completely erased all traces or documents of the ancient castle and other buildings. The recent massive building renovations with painting and covering layers completed the work, depriving the village of elements of interest. Three twentieth-century majesties have been recorded, enclosing images of the Blessed Virgin in the niche.
