The church of San Pietro in Castello built in Romanesque style, currently deconsecrated, is located in the city of Ascoli Piceno.
It stands on a small cliff between Piazza Ventidio Basso and Solestà door in front of the Roman bridge. This church is considered by Giambattista Carducci to be the "ancient sacred Ascoli monument".
History Edit
The current religious building has been rebuilt where there was the oldest church of the same name wanted, with an act of liberality, by the Lombard bishop Auclere who, in the VIII century, worked for the creation and foundation of many Benedictine monasteries. The subsequent construction took place in 1142, the time when Rinaldo was bishop of Ascoli.
The denomination "in Castello" also bears the memory of the pre-existing castle of Ascoli, dating back to 1069, called "castellum de isola", equipped with a defense tower, which stood on this promontory created by the river Tronto riverbed. The tower was also the isolated bell tower of the church itself where it was possible to read the epigraph: "This tower was built in the year 1069 of the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ." The other denomination, remembered by Sebastiano Andreantonelli, is that of "San Pietro all'Isola". A stone, which probably comes from this church, was used for the factory of the bishop's palace, in Piazza Arringo, and bears the memory of the ancient building.
The church was consecrated, in the year 1142, by the bishop presbyter who led the Ascoli church for a long period, we have news of him from 1137 until 1165. Memory of this event was handed down in the writing of the internal altar of San Benedetto Martyr:
A.D.INC.MCXLII.P.AESCULAVS.EPISC.CVM. T.SENOGLIENSI.ET.EGVBINO.EPISC. HANC.ECCLESIAM.CONSECRAVIT.V.ID.AVG.P. DIAC.CUM.PRESBYTERO.STABIL.HVIVS.ECCL. PRIOR.HOC.FIERI.STVDVIT. (Sebastiano Andreantonelli, Historiae Asculanae, liber unicus, 255)
(In the year of the incarnation 1142 Presbyter, bishop of Ascoli, with the bishops Trasmondo of Senigallia and (Ubaldo) of Gubbio, consecrated this church on August 9. Peter, deacon, with the presbyter Stabile, prior of this church, made it the realization.)
In October 1142 the Sacred Order of the Augustinian canons was instituted at San Pietro in Castello by Bishop Rinaldo, who held the position of archdeacon in the Ascoli Church. This authorization was confirmed, for the first time, by Pope Celestine III and later by Innocent III, in the second year of his pontificate, by means of the brief Lateranense dated 18 January. The church was subjected to the protection of the Holy See by Celestine III and Innocent III and housed the mortal remains of St. Benedict Martyr, kept under the altar dedicated to him. This saint was martyrdom companion of Saint Emidio. Pope Hadrian IV assigned it to the cathedral.
Other news of the church can be found in the apostolic letter of 20 November 1266 when Clement IV entrusted the prior of San Pietro in Castello with the task of defending the rights of the bishop of Ascoli. On 1 July 1339, Bishop Rinaldo IV granted the investiture of the assets of the church of Sant'Egidio di Cinno.
The current church was rebuilt, between 1466 and 1468, by the Como masters: Giovanni di Ambrogio, Cristoforo di Andrea, Domenico di Donato and Bartolomeo di M. Giacomo with the contribution of the Ascolano Chapter. The exterior of the basement dates back to the thirteenth century and this, according to Giambattista Carducci, is appreciated by the different coloring of the travertine ashlars, by the different size and by the different order of positioning of the rows of stones which are more irregular than the rest of the overlap.
Further transformations were made in the 17th century, but the restoration of 1968 brought the building back to its original style.
Other citations of San Pietro in Castello appear in the History of the Ascolana Church of Trasmondo in which it is said that above this church Sant'Emidio would have appeared in heaven to invoke peace.
A surprise. Deconsecrated church where musical and choral concerts are held. In the splendid setting of Ascoli.
Deconsecrated church transformed into a small space x performances wise shows ... Every time I go out satisfied.
