The abbey that rises in Piedivalle, in the Municipality of Preci (PG) in the Castoriana Valley, was founded towards the end of the 5th century. by the Syrian monk Eutizio. On a stone ridge the first caves were dug in which the first hermits settled. Later the monks followed the Benedictine rule and built ecclesiastical buildings, including an important library, where texts of Greco-Roman medicine were collected, the study of which allowed them to give life to the prestigious Precian surgical school, which reached the apex of fame in the sixteenth century, specializing above all in the operation of cataracts and in the surgical removal of kidney stones. Following the 2016 earthquake, most of the buildings collapsed or were severely damaged. Since June 2020, a group of professionals has been entrusted with the feasibility study for the restoration of the entire monastic complex.
