The beautiful Church of Santa Maria Maggiore is located in the city center, in a small square just behind the apse of San Vitale. The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore was erected by Bishop Ecclesius between 525 and 532, and rebuilt in 1671 in baroque style on the basis of a design by Pietro Grossi. The facade, with salients, is devoid of decorations. In the brick wall, the simple portal opens in the center and, more elsewhere, a rectangular window. The cylindrical beautiful and interesting bell-tower dates back to the 9th-10th century. The church hosts late-Renaissance paintings and sculptures ( mosaic with the image of the Madonna and child seated ), and the tomb of the Ravenna architect Camillo Morigia (1743-1795). At the bottom of the left aisle, it is possible to admire a painting by Luca Longhi, who portrays Saint Paul visiting Saint Agatha in prison. The interesting thing about Santa Maria Maggiore Church is that Altar is dedicated to Our Lady of Tumors and is a common belief that we can be cured of cancer.
We visited the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore during our walking tour of the beautiful, historic city of mosiac Ravenna. It was built by the bishop Ecclesius between the years 525 to 532; later it had to be rebuilt in 1671. The bell-tower dates back to the 9th century. The church as had the tomb of architect Camillo Morigia (1795). Another one of those beautiful Italian basilicas.
Beautiful church with a special fresco of mother Mary comforting a child. One or both of them have cancer. Saint Mary of the tumor. People come there to pray for their loved one is with cancer and they do a special mass couple times a month.
