Unfortunately, the cathedral was bombed during 1944. However, it remains a valid example of Romanesque architecture, even with the internal colonnade. Unfortunately, the old Romanesque bell tower has been completely lost. The cathedral is widely used, the chapel inside is very interesting.

The current cathedral was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style, in place of a previous church destroyed by a fire in 1124, which, being the main church of Fano, was called Santa Maria la maggiore The bell tower is a recent work, as the previous one was demolished by the Germans during the Second World War like all the bell towers and towers in the city.
