Statue of the woman with traditions in memory of the sisters Adele and Ginna Marcelli. Sansepolcro owes the credit to the sisters Adele and Ginna Marcelli for having created, at the beginning of the 1900s, a typical bobbin lace, locally called "trine a spilli". The two sisters learned the bobbin lace technique from Amelia Gelli Pagliai (1858-1942) who in turn had learned it in prison from a religious of Flemish origin. Once they became experts, they began to study the various Italian, French and Flanders lace, dismantling them and reconstructing the various passages. They soon developed the belief that it was possible to start a new lace, with its own characteristics. The processing was soon known in Europe and even in America as evidenced by the awards for diplomas and gold medals in international exhibitions of absolute prestige. In 1996 the Association "Il Merletto nel città di Piero" was founded, with the aim of re-evaluating and spreading bobbin lace by conducting lace and embroidery courses. In the same year, thanks to a city donation, the municipality of Sansepolcro set up a "Lace space" where in a permanent exhibition there are testimonies of lace and authentic documents of the Premiata Scuola di Adele and Ginna Marcelli.
