At the entrance of the small town of Valtopina, right next to the ancient Via Flaminia and near the train station, the parish church of St. Peter the Apostle is now beautifully displayed. The current configuration of the parish complex of Valtopina is a consequence of the war events of the second world war that have seen the old church destroyed, while the structure of adjacent services has been maintained even with subsequent restructuring interventions. The main entrance to the church overlooks a small square. Along the side facing the main road, in adherence to the transept there is the bell tower of modest dimensions, both planimetric and altimetric. The church, with a single nave, has an area of approximately 310 square meters, has a small transept and ends with an apse located close to the parish services building. The transept is bordered by arches and covered with a cross vault, while the apse is delimited by a rounded archway next to a quarter of a sphere. The altars, three in number, two on the transept and one in the apse, are made of stone of different colors and moldings. Above the entrance of the church there is an extremely simple choir in its lines and dimensions. The most significant decorative element, despite its simplicity, consists of the polychrome chest of drawers that covers the nave from the entrance area to the transept. The church is built with vertical stone masonry structures while the transept arches are in brick. The ceiling of the nave is in latero cement with intrados fillers to obtain the coffered effect.
Decorative elements
The most significant decorative element despite its simplicity is the polychrome chest of drawers that covers the nave from the entrance area to the transept. Also present in the windows of the windows are also polychrome with religious representations.
Structural installation
The church is built with vertical stone masonry structures, while the transept arches are in brick.
Covers
The covering structure of the transept and apse part is made of steel. For the part of the nave the structure is in latero cement with prefabricated supporting beams.
Stairs
Access to the choir, located above the main entrance, is via an internal iron spiral staircase, located at the corner to the right of the entrance.
Historical News
XX (transept renovation)
Subsequently to the seismicists of 1979, the vault of the transept, made of perforated, is subject to stiffening intervention with reinforced concrete.
1948 (whole building well)
The original church, whose construction dates back to 1864, was destroyed during the Second World War. Beginning in 1948, reconstruction began, which modified the structure of the building with an extension in width and length and the rectory was added.
XXI (whole seismic renovation and improvement well)
The latest interventions have widely affected the church from the point of view of structural consolidation following the 1997 seismic events. They covered the roof, the vaults of the church and part of the walls. Bell cell reconstruction, rehabilitation of the base.
Liturgical adjustment
presbytery - structural intervention (2000-2004)
During the general consolidation works following the earthquake of 1997, the liturgical adaptation of the presbytery area was carried out, preserving the old altar and creating a new marble altar, a pulpit and the chair of the wooden assembly. In the nave, on the left side looking at the altar, the baptismal font in glass with a wooden cover was made. Data are not available with reference to civil and ecclesiastical authorizations.
