The primitive church was built around the year 1000 - perhaps on the remains of a previous Roman temple - to perform the functions of an oratory inside the castle that stood in the highest part of the village. Little remains of that primitive Romanesque building also because it was devastated by Frederick II in 1248. Two hundred years later, however, the cathedral was rebuilt in the Franciscan style and then again transformed in the late 1700s in the Baroque style and in the early 1800s in the neoclassical style. The six chapels carved into the side walls also date back to the eighteenth century and house pictorial works especially by Giulio Cesare Angeli executed at the turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The church can also boast the title of "cathedral" as it was a bishopric and preserves the remains of San Rinaldo, patron of Nocera.
