History and Religion make this place worthy of appreciation
The Church of San Francesco in Rocca is located in the historic center of Sassuolo, in Piazzale della Rosa next to the Ducal Palace, to which it is connected through an internal passage that allowed the Dukes of Este when they were in Sassuolo to attend the Holy Mass reserved, without leaving the Palace. Inside there is the Sacred Trunk, a historic crucifix revered by the city that is carried in procession on the evening of Holy Thursday, x the streets of the historic center and after it is possible to kiss the crucifix. The church was completely frescoed from top to bottom by the great Italian artists of the era of the dukes and represents a true jewel of art. Small church called Sanctuary, simple and elegant on the outside, perfectly merged in the circle of walls surrounding the square, mysterious baroque but fascinating inside. Incredible frescoes, an uncommon memory of when the small churches were covered with figures and colors that broke through the walls and opened up another dimension. Frescoes that were often erased by the fear of the plague and the fashion of the statues. But those few churches that remain are fairy tales. Treasures enclosed in modest architecture on the outside and therefore even more surprising on the inside.
