Basilica di San Colombano

The Basilica of San Colombano is part of the complex of the Abbey of the same name, one of the most important abbeys of early medieval Italy. It was built starting in 1456 on top of the previous 9th century abbey church. In its crypt there is the sarcophagus of the founder, San Colombano. Among the treasures it contains are the splendid seventeenth-century frescoes that embellish it. On the rose window of its entrance, the statue of San Colombano stands out (it is a copy of the last century, the original is in the museum. On the front door, a Templar inscription ("terribilis est locus iste") wants to protect the place. In the square in front, events and concerts are often organized.
