The Mother Church of Oriolo, dedicated to St. George M., is inserted in the urban structure of the historic center and, together with the medieval castle (11th century), is listed among the national monuments by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage. The lions guarding the central door are from 1264, as indicated by prof. Bonelli of the University of Rome. The first implant should therefore date back to the Norman-Swabian period, when it imposed itself on the populations and clergy of the Latin rite. But the problem is not so much to know the year of its foundation as the role it has played over the centuries as the center of religiosity and, why not, as a historical-political reference point. In 1530, on 22 May, just inside this church, in the presence of the Royal Regents, the Lieutenant of the Chamber and Regent of the Collateral Council, the privilege with which King Ferdinand gave Roberto Sanseverino jurisdictional powers on this and other lands was solemnly summarized.
