The worst experience in any mobile store. Being a tourist, the only reason why I went to a Digicel store instead of getting a sim card elsewhere is that the staff would explain the available plans and help choose the best. However, the stress there were so rude and she said they would accept credit cards since the machine didn’t work and I would have to pay extra for them to swipe it at an adjacent store. After multiple times of asking her the split for the amount I need to pay, she lowered the final total suddenly.
The bigger better network
They were unable to activate the Sim card when it was in the second slot while it's as easy as selecting the slot for dialing to send the activation code. According to them the Sim card cannot work in slot two. I switched it to slot two myself, worked perfectly.
Card machine was broken, had to pay cash
By the way this store looks you'd assume its an official Digicel store. If so, they shouldn't just name any price they want, they should have company pricing, with some brochures, price lists, etc. so you could compare the prices for different packages and decide which one you want... Nothing like this, no info about packages, no prices written on anything, you have to pull the details word by word from the rep. She doesn't list anything included, just says yes, or no. The questions like, "what else is included?" are answered with "what do you need?", "what data packages you have?" - "how much data you need?", etc. She tried to give as little info as she could. Of course, the less I know, the more they can take advantage of me. And so they did. They sold me a package with 2.0G data (it actually was 1.6G doubled with promotion so 3.2G) for US$30, and another one with 1G data (around 0.8G doubled with promotion so 1.6G) for US$20.
Once we had all up and running and installed the MyDigicell app on both cell phones, we found out that I had some Data... packet that cost only 650J$ (with 1US$ = 133J$, that was ~US$5). The second line had some Social... packet that cost more, 1150J$ (still ~US$9). The rep said that activation (new SIM card) cost about US$5. So, for example, she said that if I stop by to add 1.5G again to the existing SIM card I'd "only" pay US$25 (while again, it costs only US$5 through the app!).
Using credit card with the app works, but its also shady (although this time its not the store clerks that steal your money, its the company). You pick how much money to load (in J$), from the pre-determined list, and then they load less, they "tax" you for loading money. For example, when I picked J$500, they stated that only J$400 will be loaded, and J$ 100 is tax. And then I used $350 of that to switch to 750MB plan. (My wife happened to burn through her initial data really fast :). Beware, when you switch plans you lose all data remaining on the current plan. Add-on data is not that cheap, its J$50 for 50MB. Still, using existing SIM card, for less that US$4 charged to your credit card, you can get 750MB+50MB of data without leaving your hotel room.
Hope I included some numbers that will help my fellow travelers make the best decision before the store clerks take advantage of them. I suggest to go to the store and get the cheapest package they have, just so that you leave the store having a working SIM card. Then add the plan you need yourself.
Went there trying to get a data plan. Girl couldn't give me any pricing and then at the end of the conversation said she said she had no SIM cards and looked at some guy that I'm assuming worked there but was dressed in casual clothes and asked him if he could get SIM cards and he said $1500 (JMD) . She then turned back to me and said no there's no SIM cards. You would think this Digicel being on the Hip Strip with all tourist going there would be able to accommodate but unfortunately that's not the case. Had absolutely no clue about plans or pricing and no SIM cards LOL.
