Tashian Christie (04/27/2020)
My experience unfortunately was not a good one, my end result was heat damage from a silk press and overall dead lifeless curls. This is my process and experience from beginning to end: I went to the establishment on January 9, 2020 Hair was washed thrice and a "deep condition" done. No sitting under the dryer to allow penetration of deep conditioner just a plastic cap on while sitting in an A/C area so my body would not have generated any heat to make the process effective. (I have kinky low porosity hair with fine strands) Next came the heat protectant, followed by blow drying. My hair was thoroughly blow dried. The process of pressing my hair was next. In the beginning I raised alarm about the number of passes that were being done ( up to 4 on a small section of hair). However my concerns were not seen as valid and I was told that nothing would happen to my hair. In addition I was burnt with flat iron on the scalp many times during the process All the passes were done at 450°F. I got a lack luster cut at best- who gets a cut and have single strands afterwards? Fast forward to Februrary 1 and I finally washed my hair and I saw many areas that were heat damaged especially the 1st area that was pressed on that faithful day at the back. Other heat damage area can be found throughout my hair. I messaged their number and told them what had happen and even sent pictures via whatsapp. They saw the message but they never had the common courtesy and decency to respond. So I went to shop 2 days to express my concerns, but you see when people 'tek yuh fi eediat'. They had the nerve to tell me it was not heat damage and silk press takes many week to revert. Oh please, once water touches the hair it should start to revert. I expressed to them that I believe that they did too many passes and used too high a temperature. They proceeded to try and convince it was needed based on my hair type -which is ridiculois. I have seen silk press being done on my texture hair with one pass, lower temperature and they used the same flat iron that they used. It was my first and my last time there. I believe when you have a client for the first time, you should want them to have the best experience possible. The stylist who did my hair was obviously lacking in confidence and to me it seems as if she was in the training process. Frankly I did not pay my good money to be experimented on, else I would have gone to a cosmetology school. Its April and my hair has still not 'reverted' as they say it would, but due to how I know heat damage when I see it, I had accepted that fact since February 1. My experience showed me that they nothing about the proper care of different types of natural hair, not everyone has been properly trained and never to trust a Jamaican stylist with a flat iron ever again. I believe the Proprietor of the business his messing with her brand. You cannot have a shampooist silk pressing people natural hair. So if you are in love with your kinks and coils I would not recomment them. If you dont mind heat damaged hair by all means go ahead at your own risk. What really irked overall was lack of empathy about the whole situation and also the fact that depsite my initial concerns they were not taken into consideration and at the same time I am upset at myself for not just getting up and walking out after the 1st couple pass. Deeper Than Hair TV on Youtube could provide them with some useful tips on doing silk press properly without doing multiple passes. While on that page maybe they can search for the video entitled "Silk Press on 4C Hair"
