An old cemetery in the Confucian-style, with gravestones of 81 Hayashi family members, including the graves of 12 generations of Hayashi family heads. The cemetery as now managed by Shinjuku City administration and it is opened to the public for visitation at beginning of November, every year.
Special announcement once a year
The Tokugawa Shogunate has 81 tombs of Confucian Forest Luozan and his family who served with Sajiku, one of Confucian thought, are preserved. Four tombs from the 8th to the 11th Representatives are retaining the form of Conrogation and are precious cultural heritage.
I'm scared at night. The gate was in 1927.
It is a graveyard of the Hayashi family, a sect of Cheng-Zhu school who became a government school of the Tokugawa Shogunate. It is a national historic site. It's located in a slightly confusing place in the back of a complicated residential area.
Confucian ceremonial tombs are valuable. The graveyard was gradually reduced after the Meiji era, and after the devastated one became owned by Shinjuku Ward in 1975, it was investigated and the environment was improved. There are 81 tombstones. It is open to the public in November every year, and volunteers will explain it.
In the explanation of Issei Hayashi Razan, it is stated that the Toyotomi family was forced into a predicament due to the bell inscription problem at Hokoji Temple. It is reasonable that it was heavily used by the Tokugawa family.
You can only enter on the opening day in November, but there is a fretwork window on the wall along the road so you can see inside at any time.
I couldn't put it inside.
It was written as follows on the explanation board.
Mr. Hayashi, Isseizan served Ieyasu Tokugawa with Suzaku, and since then, there have been excellent Confucian scholars, and it was the family who governed the shogunate's school system for generations.
The cemetery was located in Ueno Shinobuoka, but was relocated to the Ushigome area when it was the third Otorioka in 1698. The present cemetery is gradually shrunk, and only the tombs from VIII to XXI remain burial style by burial, but it is valuable as a rare existing example. In this cemetery, in addition to the twelve generations of the owner, 81 tombs, etc., including their families, stand in a forest.
Since March 1975, it has been owned by Shinjuku Ward to ensure proper management and maintenance of the graveyard. Along with this, in the ward, the graveyard was repaired and the environment was improved, and at the same time the graveyard was surveyed by the Jinjuku ward cultural property survey. .
Every year, the graveyard is open to the public during the cultural property protection emphasis week in early November.
