In 1888 (Meiji 21), it opened as a station for the Ryomo Railway and was nationalized in 1906 (Meiji 39) after passing through the Nippon Railway. Chisato Moritaka's "Watarasebashi" is used as the departure melody.

栃木県足利市両毛線足利駅。桐生迄用事があり東武足利市駅で下車。そこから約20分位歩いた所に両毛線足利駅があります。モダン風な一見田舎駅のような建物ですが、駅舎入るととても綺麗です。待合室もあり冬場は寒くても温まりますね!駅舎の外に出れば旧国鉄時代活躍したEF60型電気機関車が胴体保存されてますが長年の雨風等で車体塗装も落ち錆びてる部分もあり悲しくなります。EF60123元々は貨物機で活躍した電気機関車。国鉄からJRに変わりEF60型はなくなつてしまい今や最新型の電気機関車が活躍しています。

This is the station at the end of the JR holiday outing pass. If you use that pass, you can go to Odawara Station in Kanagawa Prefecture or Mobara Station in Chiba Prefecture for a round trip of 3,000 yen.

It is one of the 100 best stations in the Kanto area where the Ryomo Line runs. EF60 No. 123 is on display.
