One of the many interesting features of Tama Bochi Cemetery is Mitama-do, a half spherical concrete structure near the main entrance of the cemetery, that is the final resting place for many hundreds of the deceased, whose families pay for a burial locker for their deceased relative for a contracted number of years, typically thirty. The burial urn with the loved one’s ashes is placed in an assigned burial locker, which line the inside of the Mitama-do dome. Instead of going to a single family gravesite, bereaved families visit their loved one’s assigned locker inside the dome, and can light incense there. It’s just another example of the solemnity and yet practicality of Japanese funeral customs.
