It was easy to exchange for JR rail pass and reserve seats on shinkansen.

Very smooth experience activating our JR pass. Staff spoke fluent English and were very helpful.

Horrible. Someone needs to teach these guys some manners. We have been in Japan for a week now and went to Ueno travel service center twice this week, first to get our JR pass, second to book our Shinkansen tickets to go to Mt Fuji. Both times (8/11/18,9/11/18)we recieved appalling service by unproffesional staff who treated us like they did not want to be there. When lining up for our shinkansen tickets, we were told we would get faster service in the line for Japanese speakers because my partner could speak intermediate Japanese. The guy, probably in his mid 20s, was angry for unknown reason from the get go. Thoughout the conversation he treated us as though he had to go "out of his way" to explain the routes to us. Seems like he needed to calm down from whatever was ticking him off from his job since he couldn't avoid slamming pens at the table and raising his voice trying to explain the route. It got to the point my partner asked "are you angry?" to the service staff. How completely ridiculous. Completely unexpected that just because we did not have blonde hair and could understand a bit of Japanese, the treatment was as though courtesy was a past state of Japan. If I could give my 2 cents to the people running this service center, better watch out for your staff. If they can't behave professionally, they shouldn't be put at the front desk. The sighing, pen slamming, and voice raising need to be done out the back. Thought we would have a good trip, but off to a bad start. Pity for the management there who really need to pull in their team and have a good chat.

The staff are very accommodating. It's pretty crowded during pre and rush hours though.
