It really is an amazing statue that illustrates the interesting history of Buddhism in Japan. And it's just a cool statue that has survived earthquakes, typhoons and tsunamis. The grounds themselves excuse peace. Even our kids could not entirely disturb it. Besides the Buddha there are beautifully manicured grounds and trees, a gift shop and bathrooms. We should have done more parking research though as spots right nearby are 500 yen for 30 min (summer 2020).

I have been inside several times in a span of almost a decade. The gardens are always well maintained and it’s relaxing inside. The statue is big but not gigantic. One more interesting factor are the shops and restaurants outside the temple area. The beach is also walking distance.

Traveled here four years ago with no idea what to expect. I was so excited to see him that I started waving my arms around and jumping up and down like a school girl. One of the best moments of my life thus far.

On a day trip from Tokyo, we went to Kamakura to see the great Buddha, but there was plenty else in the vicinity. The great metal Buddha certainly stands out, but nearby are an interesting cemetery and lovely temples. Our visit was greatly enhanced by being in the middle of the cherry blossom season.
