When my friend told me that there is a toilet museum in Kitakyushu, I thought it will be one of those amazing weird (for Westerners) things in Japan. But on the contrary, this was one of the most fascinating things I've seen in Japan. I insist that everyone who wants to produce anything and sell it should come and learn how to do business here. You will learn an incredible story of passionate men who thanks to their persistance and perseverance basically reeducated and changed the whole nation. Set goals, smart decisions and vision of innovation made TOTO into a bathroom king it is today. Definitely worth a visit, also the entrance is free of charge.
Go in with an open mind, and you'll be pleasantly surprised to learn all about the history and development of toilets in Japan. There's much more to it than you might expect. Use the audio guide for clear descriptions in English. Free, friendly staff, interesting architecture, good bathrooms..
A free to visit museum giving a great view of Toto and Japan's bathroom developments. Fun museum with interactive elements to keep the kids entertained!
Found it very interesting, amazed at the dedication of its' founders in bringing white ceramic bathroom amenities to the country as well as "customer first mindset" and quality. Won't put spoilers here but is worth going to if you have spare time and aren't just in Japan for the shopping. They have a free audio pen you can borrow for the musuem or you just scan the QR code at each display to listen to the explanation as you go (but bring headphones, i can't remember if they have any to loan). The main displays have summaries in English.
The museum is bright and well- designed and the staff cannot do enough to help. There are audio guides which are easy to use and well- executed.
Interestingly, Toto had to make its money in the early days by selling ceramic dinnerware, as toilets took a long time to catch on in Japan.
The museum traces the history of the company and the Japanses culture is intertwined with the historic timeline of the evolution of the bathroom in Japan, making the whole thing very interesting.
There is also a bit about ceramic technology - I had no idea that it was very difficult in the early days to make a toilet design that functioned well AND did not crack during the firing process, where the toilet shrinks by about 10%.
Downstairs there is a showroom where you can see displays of various levels of Japanese bathrooms as people buy and install today - indeed, it's packed with customers and worth visiting on its own!
