Wonderful bakery, but not a lot of English. If you're a tourist like me, just grab random stuff. They were all good and affordable. You can eat upstairs and there is a coffee machine available.

Very nice bread but messy second floor.

Gebacken is a fairly typical European-style Japanese bakery with affordable prices and a nice selection of baked goods, cakes and pastries. As with a great many of these types of bakeries, don't let the German name and little German flags on some products fool you: there really isn't anything here that's trying to be German -- except, perhaps, those omnipresent Baumkuchen. Still delicious pastries and those 40 yen mini croissants are a steal!... -- "Mimi's Cake Tour"

An excellent place for pastries. I always visited for breakfast but I'm sure they had good desert things as well.

I’d move from Brooklyn, NY to Japan for the Gebaken bakery 😉 You can’t find yummies like this in the U.S.! It blew our minds and it will be our last stop out before saying good-bye to Kyoto. Update, down to 4 stars from 5: (***Some constructive criticism, Gebaken: it would be GREAT to have the descriptions of the baked goods in English, also, for tourists, so one gets an unwanted surprise. Yesterday’s visit was all great surprises. Today’s, not so much. The bakery didn’t have what we ordered yesterday, so we got different things and weren’t into them. Also, unpstairs REEKS of cigarette smoke and the toilet isn’t great)
