Interesting Japanese architecture of 100 years ago when they were trying to cater Western travelors(Chaplin was here.) They will welcome you in even if you were not staying here. They will show you the dining room with fancy Japanese samurai and or Kyoto aristocrat style ceilings. Coffee shop overlooking inner court is lovely but coffee and excellent cake set will cost you close to 2500 yen per person. But will be worth it if you can enjoy the thought of Chaplin sitting here. Recently renovated skillfully to hide all those anti_earthquake systems and keep on the surface the quaint, elegant architectures of the days bygone.

The main dining room is lovely, and the menu is now very French.

Stayed here with my wife and inlaws in October 2016. This place was a little hard to find, but it was a very interesting place once you find it. It has a very long history, being one of the oldest western-style hotels in Japan, and even had famous guests, like the Japanese Imperial family. The rooms are generous in size, and have bath tubs fed from the hot springs. They fill and drain faster than any bath tub I have ever seen. The three restaurants are fantastic, whether you are here for breakfast, lunch, afternoon desert and coffee or dinner. The hotel's curry dish is very famous, with my in-laws getting the to-go version to take back to their home in Tokyo. The grounds are very nice to wander around and look at the flora and water featured. We ended up spending a couple hours in the garden in the morning after we checked out, and ended up staying for lunch. The Mermaid bath can be reserved, and is such a delight. Being a western guy, I'm not too crazy about sharing my bath with other guys, so being able to reserve a private Japanese bath is really a treat. It cost $20 for an hour, but as we were the last to use it for the night, they let us go a little longer, it we wanted. There is a good bakery right in front of the hotel, and we stopped there after lunch before leaving to check out the lake and on to out next location. This is such a neat location, I certainly would not mind returning.

Gorgeous hotel, but beware... The prices are extortionate. I can't speak for the rooms, but the restaurant, bar and Orchid Lounge are all hugely overpriced. We had beers in the Victoria Bar which came to 3,000 yen for two, and tried the afternoon tea in Orchid Lounge. Cake and pie were dry, stale and expensive. Paid over 3,000 yen for coffee and cake for two, and the coffee wasn't even great quality. You have to pay 1,600+ if you want a decent filter coffee. It's a lovely location, and the gardens are pretty with waterfalls and little trails leading into the woods. You absolutely pay for the location here, so be prepared to be disappointed by the food. If you do want to visit, I recommend you do so during happy hour in the orchid lounge when all drinks are half price.
