Wonderful breads, cakes, and cookies. My favorite is the green onion, olive, and macadamia bread. The “hanjuku” chocolate cake is also delightful. They sometimes have bags of imperfect cookies for sale, this is a good buy. The quality is very high. The store and café areas are often very crowded; a downside, but a testament to Guruman’s popularity. The best area is in the back with tables and rustic buildings that put you in mind of Europe. On Sundays, a special artisanal bakery using a wood-fired oven and serving crusty, imaginatively-flavored loaves opens up in the rear. Avoid the crowded café connected to the store, buy some great bread in the back, and eat it at a table or in a dining area in one of the “cottages.” I wish there were more options for vegetarians and better labeling about ingredients— got a loaf that was described as “smoked cheese and aosa (a kind of seaweed)” and there were baby shrimp in it. Not a good surprise!
