Hidden gem in plain sight of some famous temples. Small but quiet and beautiful with an adorable moss garden, maple trees in autumn and cherry blossoms in spring. Another place where you can feel the spirit of the ancient capital without being distracted by too many visitors. The round windows with views of the garden are especially beautiful

Amazingly beautiful, little temple! The building is just wonderful and it's history is quit the story. The small garden is so nice. I could spend so much time here. The staff is very friendly and helpful! Thank you. Their goshuin is beautiful also. I recommend spending some time here.

Despite what the brochure would have you believe, this temples name actually means 'in high mountain' because it is up a steep incline. Get as bus if you want to come here. Otherwise it is a fine medium sized temple.

Beautiful small temple with significantly less tourists than the nearby Kinkakuji. Famous for its square and round windows side by side. Autumn leaves usually reach its peak in late November.

This is my go to place in Kyoto. There really isn't a bad time to come and see the temple, but the fall when the leaves starts to turn is by far the most stunning. During the busy seasons you may have to spend a little extra time waiting to get the best photo of the circular and square window. Take a chance to look up at the ceiling in the main building to see the blood soaked floorboards from Momoyama Castle. You can find a few footprints as you look around.
