Tour between Good and Evil For researchers and lovers of Buddhist philosophy, traveling the entire length of the Cave of Hanibe, is more than a spiritual adventure, there is a representation of Hell through the many sculptures along the way. Of course, it is nothing more than an artistic representation, since Good and Evil, exists within each Being.

Not many know about this largest cave museum of Japan which is also the only place with replicas of Khajuraho sculptures from India. Hanibe is the equivalent of a sculptor and refers to the father-son duo of Tsukada Yuuma and Tsugata Hakuma who built this place. The entrance to the caves is striking with a huge Buddha head followed by a short climb to the caves. Inside the caves, you have rooms with themes like life of Buddha, sculptures of India and also a hell. It was refreshing to see the replicas of Indian sculptures in a countryside city of Japan. For fans of the grotesque, the hell is an imaginative place with many interesting works of human souls getting their punishment in hell. There is also a sleeping Buddha at the top but we couldn't see it due to the bad weather.(the sign in Japanese advises against going up on a rainy day) This is not your regular tourists spot and the signs are in Japanese only but art is supposed to transcend the boundaries of language and I am sure art lovers will enjoy this experience. This is not a place for everyone though. No place to eat here but they do have a store selling T-shirts, mugs and other knickknacks. At 800JPY, the price may be high for some but remember that this site was built in 1951 and the people here are working hard to maintain it.
