Next to Yokohama's “Open Port Square”, there is “Yokohama Kaigan Church”, and a birthplace monument is built on the premises of the church. The United States-Japan Treaty of Amity and Trade was concluded in 1858, and many foreigners began to live in Yokohama, which was opened. In 1872 (Meiji 4), the Yokohama Council (now the Yokohama Coast Church) was established as a church for them. This is the first Protestant church in Japan. It was in 1873 (Meiji 5) that the ban on Christianity was officially lifted for the Japanese in 1873 (Meiji 5), and since then it has developed as a place of missionary work in Japan jointly by Protestant groups such as Reformers and Presbyterians. . This church is a beautiful building designated as a "historic building" in Yokohama. It was a stone church when it was built in 1871, but it was burned down in the Great Kanto Earthquake, so it was reinforced concrete in 1933 (Showa 8). Was rebuilt. This time, the gate was closed by day and time, so I could not see inside slowly.

During the Meiji era, missionaries from the United States and the Netherlands built a small synagogue at the 167th Yokohama settlement. In 1872, the first Japanese Protestant church was established.
