Emil and Arlene Van der Pooten are elegant hosts. Well traveled and educated with a deep knowledge of Sri Lankan lore and attractions. The family style meals are delicious and fresh. The plantation, while older, is kept clean and charming. Located up on the Hill, the views are spectacular and they will arrange a driver and guide to local attractions. Great fun for an unique local experience that you will not get elsewher

I'm slightly apprehensive about giving away this secret paradise as I come to Sri Lanka regularly and always visit and recommend to friends. A stylish and classic old home hidden amongst beautiful hills, with the most hospitable and entertaining couple as your hosts. Perfect climate and a great sleep. The food is insane. Every meal is a delicious feast of freshly prepared Sri Lankan dishes, some of which I've never even heard of before. Expect all sorts of home made jams and chutneys to accompany. We weren't short of things to do, with a fascinating walk around the plantation with Emil, who has expert knowledge of Sri Lankan biodiversity, birds and history. Enjoyed the meditation flat and natural pool. We also went on a short excursion to some lesser-known, historical Buddhist sites- real peace with amazing views. If you want to escape the tourist trap and really experience Sri Lanka this is the one.

A must visit if you are in the Kanday area but wanting peace and tranquility. Our hosts Emil and Arlene were wonderful! The food is superb and the guided walking trails reveal a lifetime passion of the many amazing Sri Lankan trees and ferns! We recomend Halagolla 100%!
