Its the first Mosque built in Sri Lanka inorder to adhere to the Quran and Sunnah as understood by the Salafus Saaliheen, built by Shaykh Al-Mujaddid Abdul Hameed Bakri (aka Darwes Haajiyar). Its said, that the Shaykh used to have a tent near this mosque where he had all his books and some medical things by which he used to treat people with the little medical knowledge he had, that was his income. Later, when the DTA madrasa was started this masjid's 1st floor was used as a hostel for the students. Its said that the shaykh had his house near the mosque, but now the shaykh's tent or the house are not there.
