A good initiative to protect elephants, feed them and take care of them. You might get a touristy feel here but if you spend more time you will find opportunities to interact with the elephants and observe them in their daily activities. They started the place with a few (3-5) elephants but now they are taking care of 88 elephants, both old and young, males and females. They also have a souvenir shop which has good items for purchase. You should talk more to the staff there if you want to know about the elephants, ask for their names and give them food. They also use elephant dung to make paper which provides jobs to several people and thus the food for elephants is also put to good use.
Hey there! (02/09/2019)
Don’t waste your time on this place. It costs 3000 rs and you will only see several elephants in chains. It takes about 10 mins to explore all this place

If you're coming from Colombo leave at around 6 am and you will reach the place at around 8.30 am which is the opening time. The feeding event starts at around 9 and you can buy a fruit basket for 250 and feed the baby elephants there. Around 10 the elephants will go to bathe in the river across. If you're a sri lankan coming from abroad make sure you take ur NIC so you won't be charged tourist priced tickets P.s. Beware of scam artists (Usually a tall fair guy wearing smart casual) near the bathing area who will try to take u to a spice garden saying its part of the Orphanage ticket tour and encourage u to buy some expensive tea and creams etc
