This is a wholesale gems and jewellery showroom. They procure the gems from their own mines, cut them, and prepare jewellery with them. They set the precious/semi-precious stones in sterling silver, white gold or gold. They can supply these gems as a wholesale or on retail basis. The visit to their showroom begins with a short video presentation on how the precious stones are mined. After which you will be shown how the rough stones are cut and shaped to bring out the best shine, in their gem-cutting and polishing work shop. Next, you will be taken around the gem museum with the wonderful collection of precious and semi precious stones of different varieties. At last, you are taken to the show room where they sell either the finished stones or jewellery. Now comes the important part of the entire exercise: the purchase of jewelry and or stones by you. Now please note that you need to drive a hard bargain. You can certainly start at atleast one third the cost which they will quote and mind you, never, ever pay more than half the price of what they quote. They will also provide a certificate regarding the quality of the gems/jewellery that you have purchased with them. I hope my experience with them will help others in their purchases. STAY AWAY. With regards to Sri Lanka related things, stay away from anything that shows a majority of “Local Guide” reviews. The ‘local guides’ flood the destination, retailer etc with good reviews to make it more appealing to tourists and therefore generate more business. With regards to Handuni’s, this was a tourist’s worst nightmare shopping experience. Our ‘local guide’ brought us here for a shopping experience. We looked at the blue sapphires and were in awe at the beauty of the stones. My friends and I agreed to purchase two pairs of earrings and a pendant. We negotiated a price and paid for the merchandise. The sales person who was very knowledgeable and seemed trustworthy, said they’d include (free of charge) a rhodium-type plating on the silver of each piece free of cost. They explained this would eliminate tarnishing. Since it was free we agreed. When they took the jewelry away that’s when the red flag went up. They came back in 10 minutes or less with completely different stones that looked like glass. My friend’s earrings were so poorly switched out that the stones on each earring didn’t match in size or shape. It was immediately evident it was a scam and without delay we requested a refund which they honored without debate. They knew they were caught. Our guide of course played dumb but the guides make money off of kickbacks from these types of scams that also include hotels. Stay far away from this place and do not take advice from any ‘local guides’ with regards to shopping or hotels.
