Somaland Estate

By coincidence we stumbled upon Mr. Koch and his fabulous estate, and it was a true pleasure to stay there. The estate is a magnificent former plantation and stepping onto the property and into the bungalow is like stepping 100 years back in time: everything breathes the class and sophistication of bygone times. Discrete yet attentive, the staff will do anything to make you feel at home. Meanwhile Mr. Koch, a former Dutch ambassador, turned out to be the perfect host. In a gentlemanly fashion - a proper G&T in hand - he entertained us with stories about his fascinating live, serving the Dutch government all over the globe. All in all it was a great experience to stay there that we would definitely recommend to any traveler visiting beautiful Sri Lanka.

Exceptionally atmospheric place tastefully decorated with antiques, tucked away in the Sri Lankan hinterland. Staying here is a truly marvellous way to get a brief glimpse of what life for the past generations of Europeans in Sri Lanka might have been like.
