This memorial is erected to commemorate Police Constable Sabhan who lost his life at this spot on March 21, 1864 during the attempt to capture Saradiel, who was known as Robin Hood of Ceylon. PC Sabhan was the first ever Ceylonese policeman to die on duty and March 21 is commemorated as Sri Lankan Police Day.
