La Gazelle d'Or first opened in 1961 and immediately attracted a discerning clientelle seeking a refuge of luxury. It has long been recognized as one of the legendary hotels in Morocco, whose stone cottages are set amidst many acres of well-landscaped bucolic grounds outside of the city of Taroudant. For decades it has been a secret getaway of the rich and famous, and because its stone cottages are actually mini-villas, there are no "rooms" as in a regular hotel. There is a large indoor formal dining room where excellent European and Moroccan meals are served in elegant surroundings, and you may also eat outside on a terrace around the large swimming pool. The greens and other vegetables used in the food served is largely "organic," and is grown in La Gazelle d'Or's own vegetable gardens. Services include massages and hammam, hairdressers and coiffure. Reservations for lunch and dinner for non-residents are required. La Gazelle d'Or is relaxed, exclusive and refined, with careful attention to details and service to its clients. Fairly formal attire is appropriate here. Obviously this is not a place for backpackers as rates for cottages are roughly the same as the Ritz Hotel in Paris. I've read some reports that La Gazelle d'Or has suffered from erratic management in recent years. If this is true, I certainly hope the dire situation will be resolved to save this special place in Morocco. Sadly, another hotel in Taroudant has gone downhill--the Palais Salam--and it now needs millions of dollars in renovations and upgrading to bring it back to its former understated glory. I do hope that La Gazelle d'Or will get its act together sooner rather than too late. It is a charming and special place that needs to be preserved at all costs.
